The Gathering Storm

Across the country, the air at the gates of Acadian University carried none of the coastal warmth of Southern California. Instead, it smelled of impending rain and wet asphalt, thick with the electric tension of a crowd on the verge of a riot.

Jasper and Annie Vance stood side by side on a makeshift platform, facing a sea of roaring protesters, flashing smartphone cameras, and heavy campus security barricades. The university administration had officially banned the controversial political activists from speaking on campus, but the restriction had only amplified their voices.

"They think locking these gates keeps our movement out!" Jasper shouted into a megaphone, his voice cutting through the damp afternoon air. The crowd erupted into a mix of deafening cheers and furious boos from counter-protesters.

Annie stepped up beside him, her expression fiercely resolute as she looked out over the banners and signs waving in the air. "But all they've done is show everyone how terrified they are of the truth!"

The crowd surged forward against the metal barriers. Jasper held up a hand, waiting for the noise to reach a crescendo before delivering their next move. "We aren't wasting another second on an institution that suppresses free speech. Our next stop is the West Coast. We're taking this fight straight to California University, and we'll see if they have the guts to try and stop us there!"

The mention of Cal U sent a shockwave through the audience, the local organizers instantly typing away on their phones to blast the announcement across social media.

Stepping down from the platform under the watchful eyes of their security detail, Jasper and Annie made a quick line for their waiting SUV. The moment the heavy doors slammed shut, cutting off the muffled roar of the crowd, the adrenaline of the rally began to give way to practical strategy. Cal U was a notoriously tough administrative nut to crack, and they were going to need immediate, high-powered legal backing the second their boots hit the tarmac in Los Angeles.

"If we're going to force Cal U's hand, we need someone who knows how to legally squeeze a university board," Jasper said, pulling up his contacts as the driver pulled away from the campus gates. "Fortunately, we know the absolute best legal mind in LA."

"The absolute best," Annie agreed seamlessly.

They looked at each other, ready to coordinate their next call, and spoke simultaneously.

"Matt Durning," Jasper said.

"Erin Silver," Annie said.

They both stopped, staring at each other in the quiet cabin of the accelerating car as the windshield wipers started to click against the glass.
