The Breach

The late afternoon sun cut through the floor-to-ceiling glass of Mercedes-Benz of Van Nuys, casting long, sharp shadows across the pristine hoods of the newest luxury models. From her glass-walled mezzanine office overlooking the showroom, Kelly Taylor should have been reviewing the quarterly sales ledger. Instead, her eyes were glued to her tablet screen.

On the live stream, Jasper and Annie Vance were practically glowing. Standing hand-in-hand before a crowd of cameras at California University, they looked less like controversial campus figures and more like political royalty. Hunter Oil had just stepped in with a massive financial rescue package, completely neutralizing the damage Kelly thought she had caused when she pulled her own family’s sponsorship.

Kelly’s hand trembled slightly as she took a sip of her lukewarm green tea. How did they pivot so fast?  Suddenly, the screen on her iPhone lit up. Unknown Number.

She hesitated, then slid it open. "Kelly Taylor."

"You need to get out of there, Kelly," a frantic, muffled voice whispered on the other end. It was a voice she recognized—but she couldn't quite recall. "They know it was you. Jasper’s people tracked the IP address from the leak. They’ve spent the last hour doxxing your dealership on radical campus forums. They’re framing you as the face of corporate censorship."

"What are you talking about?" Kelly stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor.

"They’re sending a caravan, Kelly. They want a scalp, and they know exactly where you live and work. Look out your window."

The line went dead.

Kelly dropped the phone onto her desk. Down below, the peaceful rhythm of the Van Nuys lot shattered. A fleet of ride-share vehicles and battered sedans pulled haphazardly over the curb, blocking the entrance to the service bays. Dozens of angry students spilled out, carrying hastily painted signs and megaphones. Within seconds, their rhythmic, booming chant vibrated through the glass exterior: "No more corporate puppets! Expose Kelly Taylor!"

From her vantage point on the mezzanine, Kelly watched in absolute horror as the crowd swarmed the lot, surrounding a row of pristine Mercedes SUVs. A heavy brick flew through the air, striking the windshield of a brand-new silver sedan. The glass spider-webbed instantly. Then came the terrifying sound of the front lobby doors groaning under the weight of a hundred surging bodies.

Crash.

The massive reinforced glass entrance shattered inward. A roar of student triumph echoed through the cavernous showroom floor as the protesters breached the building.

The sound of the breaking glass hit Kelly like a physical blow. Suddenly, the showroom vanished. Her mind raced backward, decades into the past, dragging her into the suffocating, smoke-filled darkness of the underground rave fire. She could feel the phantom heat on her skin, the terrifying sensation of being trapped in a corner with no exit, screaming for help while the walls closed in. I'm not going to be trapped again, she thought, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. Never again.

Sliding under her heavy mahogany desk to stay out of sight from the mezzanine railing, she grabbed her phone with a slippery, sweaty grip. She needed someone who wouldn't hesitate. Someone who could fight through a crowd. She dialed the toughest guy she knew.

"Sanders Martial Arts, this is Master Steve," a cheerful, booming voice answered over the line, completely oblivious to the war zone. In the background, Kelly could hear the rhythmic thud of students kicking heavy bags.

"Steve," Kelly whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror. "Steve, you need to help me. They broke the glass. They're inside the dealership. I'm trapped upstairs."

Steve’s tone shifted instantly from salesman to protector. "Kelly? Hold tight. Lock the office door. I’m on my way."

As Steve slammed his phone down on his desk in the dojo, his eyes caught the paperwork he had been signing before the call. It was a massive, lucrative sponsorship contract designed to expand his martial arts franchise across the state—fully funded by a subsidiary of Hunter Oil. Little did Steve realize that his business empire was now directly funded by the very villains terrorizing his best friend. And little did Kelly know, the man she just called for rescue was the secret nexus connecting California University, Hunter Oil, and the political machine hunting her down.
