The New Syllabus Ch 2
The Arrival
The Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX was a stark, jarring contrast to the tranquil waters of Lake Michigan. The humid, exhaust-heavy California air hit Emily Valentine-Walsh the moment she stepped through the sliding glass doors, immediately melting away the residual peace of a summer spent on a yacht in New Buffalo.
"Welcome back to reality," Bobby Walsh said with a grin, navigating his wheelchair smoothly through the sea of tourists and luggage carts. He looked relaxed, his skin bronzed from weeks of outdoor workouts, his arms moving with the easy strength of an athlete.
Emily laughed, adjusting her sunglasses. Even with a few streaks of gray tossed into her signature edgy haircut, she still radiated the rebellious, high-energy charm that had always defined her. "I don't know, Bobby. I think I could have stayed on Dylan’s boat for another six months. Watching him micromanage a multi-state cannabis empire from a sun lounger was surprisingly therapeutic."
"Dylan always did know how to turn a counter-culture vibe into a luxury brand," Bobby said as they made their way toward the rideshare zone. "And Brenda basically running the entire real estate market on the Michigan coast? The two of them are unstoppable."
"Well, the Walsh family has a habit of being unstoppable," Emily said, stopping to check her phone. She looked over at her husband, her expression softening into a warm, teasing smile. She leaned down, planting a quick kiss on his cheek. "You know, back in the nineties, I always knew I’d end up marrying a Walsh boy. I just had to wait for the absolute best one to find me at the gym."
Bobby’s eyes crinkled with genuine affection. When he had started his grueling wheelchair training sessions a few years back, he had just wanted to get in shape for his academic transition to California University. He hadn't expected his personal trainer to be the sharp, fiercely independent woman who would eventually agree to hold his PhD stipend check.
"Flattery will get you everywhere, Mrs. Walsh," Bobby chuckled, looking down at his phone as a text buzzed through. "Looks like our ride is here. Brandon texted. He’s already at the house waiting for us."
Emily smiled, checking the time on her watch and sighing at the notorious LA traffic updates lighting up her screen. "Well, let's get moving, because I'm definitely going to need a drink after this flight—and we already owe him a massive apology for completely missing his welcome home party this evening."
